Getting It Off My Chest

Terry Burton is a psychotic, lying for Jesus, sack of shit.

Damn, that felt good.

I'd pay Ray to let me post that on his blog.

  1. Let it out, Rufus. Tell us all about it.

  2. Yep. Try as hard I as I might, I'm finding it impossible to ignore his latest idiotic ramblings....

    I might need an intervention.

  3. Terry is not well, and I think we should just leave him alone.

A while back, he posted about how he was moving back to his hometown and would be near his family and family friends. I posted, in all sincerity, that I was really glad for him. What I didn't say is that I think he could benefit from being around his family. And I guessed this his family may have encouraged him to move back for that reason.

He has given me the impression that he spends a lot of time going around doing street witnessing, handing out million dollar bill tracts. I don't think he's a troll or a liar for Jesus. I just think he isn't well. His life doesn't seem very fulfilling, and his worldview is so narrow that he seems incapable of fully participating in contemporary life.

My conclusions are based more on his profile and Web page than on what he says on Ray's dope farm. I enjoyed a laugh when I saw them, and still do, and don't feel guilty about it. But I also think that there are things going on here that go beyond mere Rayniacism.

  5. I cannot fathom why you speak of Terry Burton, my mentor in these disparaging tones. :(

  6. On his fieryphoenix blog he has a Live Leak video that has a still frame shot of 2 soldiers laying on the ground, one of which has his leg blown off. And this nut has the nerve to talk about other people having things on their blogs and profiles that people don't want to see???

I know, I know, he's ill, but damn.

  7. I agree with Geoff.

Terry isn't just a fanatical theist. It's plain that he's a very mentally disturbed man. I just try to ignore him - you couldn't ever reason with him anyway.

  8. Hmm.. Maragon I can see your points

However I do not think that Terry's mental illness gives him carte blanche to go off spouting about what obscene new conspiracy theory he has taken recent obsession with. Its why I chose to rebuke him specifically on his "New Dawkins Book" assertion that he has been spouting forever. True, he seems to be deluded to his very core, and the fact that Ray has not suggested some help for him is absolutely pitiful.

However, I do no feel that this is enough to just ignore him and pretend he does not exist. This might just encourage him all the more in his extravagant conspiracy theories in an effort to gain attention from us. I think a gentle refutation on his more crazy accusations, absent of mocking and present in facts, might help to keep him to at least stay prescient in our conversations.

(Yes I admit I mocked him in my last comment, Upon further reflection I will refrain from doing so in the future.)

  9. I've always had a hard time with Terry. Reading his posts are painful and his blogs are just creepy. He clearly isn't well.

    Rando,
If you think you need an intervention, you don't.

Maybe not, but I kinda feel bad after a bit. His posts are so idiotic, I am unable to lay off the sarcasm. It's also too easy. Kind of like boxing a double amputee.

It would be a lot easier to ignore him if he wasn't so smugly condescending with his complete disconnect with reality.

  13. One of the reasons I have so little respect for Ray is knowing that he takes money from obviously defective people like Terry. I have gleaned from the Terry posts that I have been able to stomach that he has purchased a chunk of Ray's "premium" crap- like the evangelist course, which is pretty high dollar- really makes me sick. The only thing that makes me feel better is imagining Terry showing up on his buddy Ray's doorstep with his suitcase...

  14. Rando,
If I can learn to ignore him, you can too. You should have been around when he was off his meds and sock puppeting about four different handles. It was soooo funny!

I think Ray told him to get it under control.

No matter how you slice it up, Terry is a caricature of the typical christian fundamentalist and I love to see him right there in the mix, discrediting the whole lot of them!

  15. Someone link me some sock puppet posts.

    I'll give you cookies.

  16. Hey Maragon,

Assuming (and this time, it's probably pretty safe to) that Linda is one of his sock puppets, you should see his/her response to a post I wrote in one of my blogs about a dream that I had. You have to read my post first to see just how totally crazy it is.

  17. What I have to wonder is how all of the other Rayliens don't look at the posts of Terry and wonder, "Gee - why is it that the craziest person on this blog is on the same side as me! Maybe I need to rethink this!"

  18. lance:

Recently, "All Fired Up" criticized Terry, and Burton went off on him. Said he wasn't the real AFU, he was an atheist impostor, that kind of shit. Can you imagine if Ray criticized him? Terry Burton would be nation news within a day. Kinky Friedman could write "The Ballad of Terry Burton".

  19. Thanks for the example, Lance. That's just....I don't know. His replies make me uneasy, in the same way that the guy on the bus who's laughing and rocking back and forth while occasionally eying you makes me uneasy.

  20. Maragon: I don't think we should ever ride the bus together.

  21. Rufus,

No Canadians are riding the bus right now. Didn't you read about the Greyhound bus slaying up here last week?

I'm going to say something controversial.
I feel that some severely mentally ill people like Terry need religion. It's a relatively harmless delusion - it's not like anyone takes someone like Terry seriously, even the other theists kind of shun him - and it keeps him preoccupied. One thing you can say about religion is that it is an engulfing delusion. Something that one can fully submit and ascribe to.

On the other hand, I often wonder how much mental illness goes unchecked because of the exempt status that we allow religion. If I claimed to talk to invisible flying snowmen like Terry talks to god, I'd only be posting here during my 30 minutes of daily allotted internet time.

  22. maragon,
do patients get internet time? There are so many whacko sites I don't think that's a good idea. Even a harmless site can trigger a crank. One wrong phrase or picture, one misunderstood comment can send an abnormal mind over the edge.
Therapists try to get their patients to think through their own worldview to spot the contradictions, and recommend medication to alleviate the extremes.

  23. Maragon,
I agree about letting Terry concentrate on his bible rather than writing terrorist manifestos, etc.
In fact, I sometimes worry that if one of those fundies would actually abandon their silly beliefs, it could cause them psychological harm because in many cases their whole support system collapses. In that case, if there is underlying problems they could become despondant.

  24. Felix,

The institutions that I volunteered in allowed patients a certain allotment of time on the internet. Naturally many controversial things were blocked - you couldn't see any sex, bombs, blood, fetishism, cannibalism, etc. However, religious pages were uncensored. Always seemed funny to me, seeing as the bible contains some of the most violent, disturbing and heinous acts I can think of.

Unlike Ray we don't censor our comments, so as long as it's on topic and not spam, fire away.
