Boo You CBN!

I found something on CBN that really pissed me off and I wanted to expose it because it deals with purity and tries to scare and guilt trip young women into following what they consider a pure lifestyle. The article was long so now I'm going to roll up my sleeves and do a little dissecting (without taking things out of context of course).

Claim number one: "It’s true that when you stay pure you avoid a lot of negative consequences—diseases, heartbreak, pregnancy. "

Sure there are risks involved with pretty much all fun things the world has to offer (riding in a car, flying on a plane, baking a chocolate cake, etc), but there are precautions one can take to lower the risks to an insanely low percentage. Think about what you're about to do, plan ahead, drive safely, put your seat belt on, use protection and you should be fine. Sure you're still taking a risk, but it's a risk some people are willing to take and because when done safely the risks are so low the risk is not a crazy one.

Claim number two: " When you have sex with someone, you have sex with every other person your partner has had sex with."

Following this logic when you shake someone's hand you have touched every person and thing that person has touched. You have touched that persons nose, the inside of their mouth, their ass, their genitals, their spouse. They completely ignore the fact that people wash themselves. Until homeopathy has any validity their is no magical force that gives water or other bodily substances a "memory" of everything it has come in contact with. Furthermore, this really isn't a psychologically healthy attitude and could really harm people prone to OCD.

Claim number three: " Once you have sex with someone, you give something away that can never be gotten back. Sex is more than something you do, it is part of who you are. It’s an outward indicator of what’s going on inside of you."

This is pure magical thinking. Virginity is a spiritual idea. It's a concept used to scare and control people. There is no such physical thing as virginity. And no fundies, breaking the hymen does not equal loosing virginity. Otherwise I think I lost my virginity to a bike when I was eight.

  1. I was listening to a religious radio show one day (I sometimes listen just for the insane things they say) and they said it had been scientifically proven that for every partner you have you lower your desire to ever have sex again.

So, basically they were saying you can 'run out' of libido just because you have sex with more than one person in your lifetime.

Maybe someone should tell that to all the televangelists caught with their pants around their ankles.

  2. If that were true you think there would be no such thing as a sex addict. Sometimes I listen to way of the master radio just to see what new crazy things they can come up with for me to try and rebuttal.

No, no, no. You see, you misunderstand them!

They aren't having "sex" for pleasure. They're trying to lower their desire to have sex to get closer to God!

Hypothetically, I wonder how libido would be measured. Would each sexual encounter lower your Libido Points? Perhaps it would model exponential decay and never truly reach zero. (Which would give wiggle room if they do it again :P)

  5. Consider just how twisted fundies can get about sex, look at this from a home schooling site I found as a link on a Raylian's profile:

    Mind of a
    child

Yup, the couple had their first kiss at the alter, and rather than recognizing that as a form of insanity, it was praised. Maybe the kids were just lying to
    their parents.

Skeptical Sorcerer, don't you see Jemaine and Brett as a parody of a certain kind of childish sexual naivete? I love the scene when they are trying to sort out a threesome that turns out not to be what they expected. They're brilliant.

  6. geoff,

OMG I hope those kids were lying to their parents.

Yeah, I love how Brett and Jemaine try and get chicks/ get laid. They could have easily been raised by fundies.

    yaeger,

I like the libido point system. Maybe they should develop a new kind of Christian video game around it. It could be called "purity power" or something.

  7. By the way, Joshua S. Black insists masturbation is a sin. I think he's unmarried. I'm not trying to take a cheap shot, but how does he survive? Do it and feel guilty? Resist and go crazy?

Christopher Hitchens says that (some) of the 9/11 hijackers were adult virgins. (I don't know about his facts here.) He argues that this is the essence of a mental disease and that it could have contributed to their belief system and actions. It's an interesting argument.

  8. Yaeger,

I get it now! How could I have missed that?

  9. Geoff, I don't get the masturbation thing either, unless he just has very, very low testosterone and has no desire whatsoever.

  10. There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who masturbate and those who lie about it.

  12. Every time I read something like this bullshit from preachers, I wish it was unlawful to lie. Hmmm, isn't that just what the theocrats want? Has it ever occurred to them what a deep hole they're aspiring to dig themselves into?

    Maragon,
I had this hysterical exchange with Shiver (Curtis) back a few weeks ago at Ray's. I said something similar- 99% of the people between puberty and sixy years old masterbate and the other 1% are liars and, get this...he came back and admitted that he wouldn't dispute me on that and that he never tried to say he was perfect!

I was surprised, to say the least!

Sex is exactly like eating...One get can get very full at dinner, but wake up hungry as hell!

  14. SS,

Don't you know you are a piece of chocolate that has been passed from hand to hand by dozens of people? How can you expect a nice boy to want to eat you like that? hmmm?

  15. milo,

LOL! I honestly don't know how people that paranoid make it through life.

    felix,

It's OK to lie as long as it's for jesus!
