Why I'm glad Jean Gasho-Musuka can't vote in the US

In comments the other day Jean had this to say about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee: (Since I see Jean is going back and deleting her comments on the post I'll just cut and paste them here.)

"Non magic, am so glad you are not Bristol's mother. Thats all I can say. God has blessed her with godly parents, hope she realizes how fortunate she is. This blog has made me appreciate Palin even more, I really like her now. I mean it. She is on the right path."

"Even if it was not her desision, at least she is obedient and obeying her parents. She made her bed she has to lie in it. There are always consequences to sin. Her parents knows whats best for her. Killing the baby is not the answer.
Dont know much about American politics, but I already love Sarah Palin. Heard she is Pro- life and hates killing unborn babies. She has a lot then to offer...."

Why am I glad Jean can't vote in the US? Because just like Ray, she and other evangelicals tend to pick out one single hot button issue like abortion and vote solely on that issue instead of looking at the candidates overall position on many different issues.

Jean also made a snap decision that she liked Palin simply because Palin's daughter is knocked up and she is keeping the baby. Just like that, Jean loves the woman.

Well, Jean, this woman whom you called a "godly parent" also slashed funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live. How "godly" and "on the right path" is she now, Jean??

And here's the guy that her daughter is going to marry with Palin's blessing. (Quote from the article):

"On his MySpace page, Johnston proudly declares: "I'm a f---in' redneck."

"I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing," he says on the site.

He also warns that if anyone messes with him, "I'll kick ass."

The Web site, before it was removed, appeared not to have been accessed for a year.

On it, he admits to having a girlfriend.

On the part where it asks about children, he wrote, "I don't want kids."

Now, maybe he'll turn out to me a decent father to the child. We won't know that for awhile. But my point is that it doesn't seem very "godly" or "on the right path" to endorse a marriage between your daughter, who is still a child, and a guy who is still a child himself and clearly doesn't want kids.

But, Jean, you might still be in luck. Palin also has a thing for banning books and that's pretty godly, right? Hell, Jean, maybe she'll try to bring back slavery, that ought to make you pretty damn happy.

  1. Do we really want to pick on Jean and Palin's daughters? I thought this blog was about Ray.

  2. She wanted to ban books?
I read the article. That seriously makes me sick. What will she ban next? Scientific journals that don't agree with her form of creationism? Atheist books like The God Delusion or Letter to a Christian Nation?

Isn't there a First Amendment that certifies freedom of press- So, you know, this type of silly censorship from an authority figure isn't a problem. The constitution was created to keep the minority safe from the various silly beliefs of the majority trying to push their weight around (I.E. Palin banning reading material because she finds it offensive). I wonder if she realizes what she's running for, and if her agenda coincides with the law, or if she expects to bend it.

  4. Kaitlyn,

We've often discussed other theists and issues that relate to atheism on this blog.

And I don't really think that pointing out these things is 'picking' on these people.

  5. Well, Jean may be unusual, but she's still our friend and she visits this blog. So if I had written this post, I would have tried to keep that more in mind.

But I'm just cooky that way. :P

I don't really disagree with the atheists here or anything. I'm just looking out for Jean's feelings. :)

  6. That's cool...

NOW BE ANGRY WITH ME THAT SOMEONE IN THIS DAY AND AGE STILL WANTS TO BAN BOOKS!

    ANARCHY IN THE U.K.!

No wait, I live in the US...

I've been watching too much V for Vendetta....

  7. Kaitlyn,

I'm not you, nor am I as 'nice' as you are. I'm not concerned with Jean's feelings. If she, you, or anyone else is going to put something out there like the bullshit nonsense that she has then don't do it without being ready to have it severely critiqued to say the least.

  8. Kaitlyn, this blog is primarily about Ray. But not exclusively. There are, what, over 35 of us, so it's not surprising that other subjects come up, especially subjects that are in the news.

And it's not "picking on" someone to criticize the comments that she posted herself (although it appears she is now deleting them for some reason). She put it out there, let her defend it.

The same goes for Palin: In accepting the veep slot, SHE is the one who exposed her family to the merciless light of publicity. So let HER defend them. It's not your job.

  9. Actually I have learnt something that might make some of you happy. As much as I like Sarah Palin and I love the fact that she is pro-life, I dont think I am sure about her running for vice president anymore. Its not biblical and its anti-family. She has five children and a husband and I think her place right now is in the home, looking after her family. I cant see how she will be able to care especially for her baby and also do her demanding job. First, if Mr. McCain was pro-family, he would want to see Mrs. Palin at home taking care of her five children, not headed to Washington to be consumed by the responsibilities of being second in command to the most powerful man in the world. It’s not exactly a pro-family job.But I admire that she certainly values the lives of babies and chose not to abort her down syndrome child. I still love the woman though, I just think she is ignorant a little of her role as a mother and wife according to the bible.
I do not think Mr McCain made a wise desicion picking Palin but I think he is still the only man who right for the job. Barack Obama I think is cruel. He supports the infanticide of fully born babies, the most shocking thing is his wife Michelle is up for this evil barbaric thing as well. Its evil. I dread to think what will happen if Obama wins.

Don't you see, this is exactly why the republicans love fundies so much. You are what the communists used to call 'useful idiots'. As NM rightly pointed out, you are fooled into focusing on a few hotbuttons issues like abortion and gay marraige.

The politcos talk the talk to keep you all pacified and get your support, meanwhile when they get into office they do want they whilst, while you're busily distracted with this godly society bullshit. And what they whilst doesn't have yours or my best interest in mind.

Sure they'll support some of your so-called 'family values' issues to keep you happy and exert a tightened grip in society, but above all the federal goverment is in the business of business. Capitalism is our god and it is a very jealous god. All other issues come a distant second to making profits. Palin is just a token offering to the useful idiots. She is to McCain what Bush is to Cheney (the real POTUS).

Nobody's picking on Palin's daughter. They're just pointing the hypocyrsy of Mama Palin. So what she didn't have an abortion. How'd that abstinence only teaching work out? Conservatives keep pushing and funding that AO teaching to placate fundies even though studies have shown it doesn't work and is actually harmful.

Really, Jean, if you all are going to insist on continuing to live in a fantasy world, couldn't you all do it on the bottom of the ocean.

    Thanks

  11. Q: Will you support funding for abstinence-until-marriage education instead of for explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics, and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?

Palin: "Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support."

Q:...stance on teaching creationism alongside evolution[?]

Palin:"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information.... Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject.... It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

Being an inconsistent hypocrite is fun.

Even as someone who is against a McCain / Palin presidency, I am actually saddened to hear you say that. While I respect your dedication to the family, not voting for Palin because she's a woman... I can't finish, this is making me too depressed.

  13. Jean,

Congratulations. You've replaced stupid reasons for liking her with stupid reasons for not liking her.
