On purpose

"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." -Marcus Aurelius

  1. This is generally how I've lived my life, from childhood through my religious phase - to my present situation (deist? agnostic? selective atheist?).

  2. I find it absolutely astounding that people were thinking these thoughts 2,000 years ago and we still have Ray and Terry here today.

Christianity is the cockroach of religions. When the conflagration that they set off burns out, they will be all that remains.

  3. Given how little the people of Rome knew about the workings of the universe compared to us today, they were amost realists. They understood that if there were benevolent gods, then there must also be selfish ones, evil ones, capricious ones to explain all of it.
I keep chuckling when I remember the high priest from the mini-series Rome. He would have his clients pay 'donations' and then fabricate omens (by letting white doves fly at a specific time and place) for the benefit of them. A win-win for both, and the ones who lose are the ones who sincerely believed the omens were true works of the gods.
A television production about emperor Constantine showed a scenario where he cleverly used natural events to make his outnumbered soldiers believe that God was revealing his favor (eclipses or lightning), so they were confident in fighting with God on their side and beat their enemy. Even the collapse of a shoddily built bridge under the hoves of the enemy cvalry was interpreted as a miracle by the superstitious warriors.

The verification word for this post was 'givuead'.
