I'm a Raytractor!

Thought I'd make an actual post as to what I'd like this blog to be. First off, I think it would be a good idea to give my thoughts on what the point of this should be, and who I think should join.

I think that anybody who has a problem with the particular brand of theology that Ray Comfort is pushing should join up. This, of course, means that many Christians and other theists can join. I don't think that it's necessary that you run an atheism/skepticism blog yourself to join up. (Shoot, I only sometimes write about that! I did a series of posts on the Batman movies!) I also don't think it's necessary that you even contribute posts to this blog. Sure, it would be nice if you at least contributed to some of the discussions, but what would be nice about this is to just see how many of us are out there.

Why even do this? I want to take part because I genuinely find what Ray Comfort is doing to be morally offensive. I don't find Christianity to be offensive, don't get me wrong. Most Christians I know look at their religion more along the lines of how they're not perfect, but they know that there's a personal God who loves them. While I don't see things this way, I can't really find a fault with it. What offends me about Ray's preaching is the basic message that you're pretty much useless, dirty, lowly, etc. and the only way you can have any value is by believing in his particular interpretation of Christianity. I also find his distortions about science to be not only laughable and ridiculous, but outright dangerous.

I agree with what Macguyver, Jr. said in his post as well. We could also share book recommendations and things like that.

I also feel like anybody should be allowed to post responses, and we shouldn't censor anybody. However, I don't think that people who are here to push religion should become members. I don't know why they'd want to anyway. So, we're a select group, but we allow everyone into the clubhouse. I suppose that we might want to make exceptions if somebody's being unreasonably abusive or a complete troll, but I don't think we want to be as bad as Ray is when it comes to censoring. (Don't get me wrong - that's his right. His blog, his rules.)

So, if all that sounds good to you - join up!

  1. I'm a Raytractor! - sign me up.

I expect to be one of the less frequent contributors, even though I'm the go-to-gal for half-assed limericks and other doggerel. I hope we get lots of responses from others who find Ray's theology and his views on sexuality, education, and other topics offensive or worse.

Dale said once that The Soap Box gets about a thousand hits a day. There are, what, perhaps 20 - 30 regular commenters. Which leaves a lot of lurkers, some of whom might be the sort of believers we're looking to interact with.

Unlike Ray we don't censor our comments, so as long as it's on topic and not spam, fire away.
