"Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and He placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with His arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that He separated the races shows that He did not intend for the races to mix."
- Judge Leon Bazile regarding a case of interracial marriage: 1959

I recently did a post on the subject of gay marriage. Seriously, it's the same issue with slightly different faces.
ReplyDeleteThe argument is the same.
ReplyDelete"God didn't intend these two to marry. If He did, He wouldn't have...
A) Put them on Separate continents
B) made Adam and Eve and not Adam and Steve."
The other issue I am hoping people will talk about is that this quotation was from a state judge in 1960.
ReplyDeleteThe quote is only 50 years old and not made by a radical fundamentalist preacher but by an educated legal professional.
I'm just glad we've come so far in 50 years. A judge to said the equivilent today would be out of a job.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the bigots will target next generation, when homophobia falls out of favor?
Well, since some guy said it almost 50 years ago, and since he was a Christian - that must mean all Christians feel the same way.
ReplyDeletePS. the above is satire, based on Ray's latest supposition that since one atheist philosopher claimed to not want God to exist, all atheists must somehow feel the same.
Concerning that recent post of Ray's, with the quote by Nagel: I don't want the Biblical God to exist either. A God that punishes children because of the sin that two people who supposedly lived thousands of years ago supposedly committed? The God who loved the Midianites and the people of Jericho and all those unborn babies that didn't make it onto the Ark? That God doesn't exist, and I'm glad.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting how Judge Brazile sounds so utterly sure of himself?
ReplyDeleteThat tone reminds me of someone else. Who might that be, I wonder? No, no, don't tell me, it's on the tip of my tongue....
;-)
Anyhoo. Perhaps bleevers might be just a leetle more careful about declaring what their imaginary friend wants.
Uh-huh. And perhaps pigs might fly.
Don't speak too soon, Weemaryanne.
ReplyDeleteWeemaryanne,
ReplyDeleteDo you have any ice fishing going on up there yet? If not, OK.
I did have a couple pigs fly by last night. They always do that the night before the full moon..u know what I mean. I'm starving for verse or two...capice?
I've been expressing Nagel's views in some way or another since I got here. So have many others.
ReplyDeleteWhat's so revealing about Nagel's quote? It summarized most our positions on God - God doesn't exist, we don't want him to, but we acknowledge many people do believe in God.
There you go, Wee girl. Compliments of the Quasarites!
ReplyDeleteQ- good one
I wouldn't mind if He existed. The Christian God is easy to please. All you gotta do is pray a little prayer and promise not to be bad again. Easy. (Rinse and repeat if needed)
ReplyDeleteI always get annoyed when people say "God" when they mean YHWH or the Christian God.
ReplyDeleteOther people have Gods too. Gods that they believe in just as much.
And regarding the quote in the post: It's strange how the Gods always have the same morals and ethics as the person who is talking......

ReplyDeleteChris, you just won about three awards and several hundred flying pigs.
ReplyDeleteThat was great Chris.
ReplyDeleteChris,
ReplyDeleteThat was beautiful.
We have come a long way in 50 years, this kind of thinking is no longer the norm. The only problem is that it is still around. Especially in small towns, you have people who don't consider themselves racist but still feel that there shouldn't be interracial couples. It's really sad. Of course we also have the just plain racist assholes, that's even worst!
ReplyDeleteAnd Chris:
That was perfect!
"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature." -Abraham Lincoln (I think?)
ReplyDeleteI always get annoyed when people say "God" when they mean YHWH or the Christian God.
ReplyDeleteBingo! It's a dishonest attempt to get people to start talking about God. Once that happens, they step out from behind the curtain and claim "Ok, well, those other Gods - I don't believe in em either"
weemaryanne,
ReplyDelete"Judge Brazile"?
Was that just a typo? If god is against interracial marriages, he must really hate Brazil...
Tilia,
ReplyDeleteLOL. I suspect the nonexistent superbeing doesn't hate Brazil any more/less than it hates every other nation.
:-)
"The only problem is that it is still around. Especially in small towns, you have people who don't consider themselves racist but still feel that there shouldn't be interracial couples."
ReplyDeleteOf course we all know that the best thing is to throw all those genes in the pool and stir, stir, stir!
weemaryanne,
ReplyDeletebut the USA would be pretty secure anyway. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read in 2005 that Will Smith wouldn't kiss a white woman in a movie, because people wouldn't like that...
I came across an online community for individual seeking interracial love. It is ++++((((---Blackwhitemeet. C O M))))++++ All singles there are seeking interracial relationships. Interracial is not a problem here, but a great merit to cherish!
