Fittingly, there was a huge Church of Scientology ad pasted in the middle of the page.henwlihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00223426423591084340noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-181908460544060022008-11-02T18:55:00.000-06:002008-11-02T18:55:00.000-06:00Just a note, the treo is by Palm, not Sony.Just a note, the treo is by Palm, not Sony.Ornitheologisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04543594076285083610noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-74495486805727092572008-11-02T16:18:00.000-06:002008-11-02T16:18:00.000-06:00I use the BetterGmail Firefox extension, so I don'...I use the BetterGmail Firefox extension, so I don't see any ads.nonmagichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12986030395050670437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-35075811080769332592008-11-02T11:36:00.000-06:002008-11-02T11:36:00.000-06:00stan is spontaneously channelling the spirit of BO...stan is spontaneously channelling the spirit of BOFH

Spontaneously?

Obviously, the problem is due to a nullified, generic topology stackdump.

(We really did use this BOFH-style generator to generate excuses...)

--
StanStan, the Half-Truth Tellerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04260266801557543879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-35669491622925786342008-11-02T04:24:00.000-06:002008-11-02T04:24:00.000-06:00stan is spontaneously channelling the spirit of BO...stan is spontaneously channelling the spirit of BOFHStewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13584058723818113125noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-60241861225043372422008-11-01T23:43:00.000-05:002008-11-01T23:43:00.000-05:00It's all about making $$.Google is a pretty good c...It's all about making $$.

Google is a pretty good company, and it is extremely unlikely that any of your personal information is actually captured -- even if it were, the sheer volume of data would be impossible to parse even if Orwellian surveillance were the goal.

You're right about the mechanism; keywords are located in the message text -- a process which can occur before the message makes it to your "inbox" -- and "appropriate" targeted ads are tagged. It's simple, and it's effectively anonymous, but it's also (obviously) a little unnerving.

It's just one of many reasons why I don't offer true personally identifiable information to teh intarwebs, and why I use my own mail server rather than anyone else's. If you've ever worked in a Tech Support capacity, you know already how stupid users are, and that spam, phishing attacks, viruses, malware/grayware/spyware, and identity theft are almost always the fault of the user in question. The less you expose yourself to privacy issues, the less concern you need have.

I fucking hate end users.

--
StanStan, the Half-Truth Tellerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04260266801557543879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4140917903722388348.post-65999378629571947642008-11-01T22:54:00.000-05:002008-11-01T22:54:00.000-05:00I've noticed this, but I haven't given it much tho...I've noticed this, but I haven't given it much thought. There ia a 1984/Big Brother kind of vibe though, isn't there? However, I like it when I check my SPAM folder and get a new SPAM recipe.TJHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10570384567898770658noreply@blogger.com
